Early Intervention Enrollment Process
Student on an IEP
When a child qualifies for an IEP, the IEP team works together to determine the placement that is best for the child. The parent is a critical, valued member of the IEP team. The team ensures that the child receives special education services in the child’s Least Restrictive Environment.
Peer Model Program
Peer models are an important and essential part of our Early Intervention program. Our peer models follow a typical preschool classroom schedule. While completing activities, our peer models serve as a model to some of our students who have specialized learning needs in areas such as cognition, speech, reading, fine motor, gross motor, and/or behavior. Our goal is to have friendships develop among all students and have your child demonstrate developmentally appropriate behavior.
In order for children to become a peer model, your child must meet the following criteria:
-
Be 3 years old by August 1, 2024
-
Exhibit age-appropriate social behavior and play well with other students, share, take turns
-
Focus on an activity for 8-10 minutes.
-
Live within Upper Arlington school district boundaries
-
Be completely toilet trained (not using Pull-Ups)
-
Readily cooperate with the teacher and classroom aide
-
Speak in clear, understandable English
In order for children be a peer model, the following steps must be taken:
- Complete all PowerSchool registration forms
- Receive a positive recommendation form from a non-family member
- Pass a developmental screening assessment
Peer models can enroll in either the morning or afternoon session. All sessions are Monday-Friday, and peer models are expected to be in attendance all five days of the week. Your student would be in a classroom led by an Upper Arlington Schools Intervention Specialist. In our classrooms children receive instruction aligned to the Early Learning and Developmental Standards. Our classrooms follow the High Scope curriculum.
There is no cost to the family if your child is selected to be a peer model after participating in our screening process. Parents are responsible for transportation. We do not discriminate in the enrollment of children upon the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
